How to Choose the Right Cardstock for Card Making

Merchant: Solaro Studio • Gurugram, Haryana • Support: [email protected]

Cardstock is the single most important supply in card making — it's the base everything else sits on. Choose well and your cards feel professional; choose poorly and they crease, warp, or fall flat. Here's what to look for.

Understanding GSM (Weight)

GSM (grams per square metre) tells you how thick and sturdy the paper is:

  • 200–250 gsm — good for card layers and panels.
  • 250–300 gsm — ideal for card bases; folds cleanly and stands up on its own.
  • Above 300 gsm — premium feel, but can crack if not scored before folding.

Finish & Texture

  • Smooth — best for stamping, printing, and writing.
  • Textured (linen/hammered) — adds an elegant, premium look.
  • Glossy or pearlescent — great for festive and wedding cards.

Why Acid-Free Matters

Acid-free cardstock won't yellow or become brittle over time. If you're making cards meant to be kept — weddings, anniversaries, keepsakes — always choose acid-free.

Colour & Versatility

Start with a core of white, ivory, and kraft, then add a few colours you'll use often. White and ivory work for almost any occasion and show off stamping and ink beautifully.

A Quick Buying Checklist

  1. 250–300 gsm for bases.
  2. Acid-free for anything meant to last.
  3. Smooth finish if you stamp or print.
  4. Score before folding heavier weights to avoid cracking.
